LAUNCH DAY 11: TOP LAUNCH LESSONS LEARNED from NORDSTROM

Day 11: on the launchpad: Nordstrom Rack Grand Opening

I just returned from a very successful Grand Opening for the Downtown Seattle Nordstrom Rack.  It was bananas!  People lined up as early as 6am just to be one of the first to walk through the double glass doors.  I arrived at 8am and didn't miss a beat.

While caught up in the Rack Rapture, I managed to stay present in the moment and learn a thing or two about The ART of the LAUNCH.

  • Generate Buzz!  Before the doors were even open Peter McMahon, Nordstrom Rack Store Manager tweeted out clues about 20 emerald hangers each worth $100.  I was not one of the lucky finders but I had a great time searching.  10 more emerald hangers will be hidden tomorrow with more clues via tweets starting at 8am if you're game...
  • Generosity Rules!  I cannot even tell you how many things were free!  As soon as I stepped foot on the Westlake Plaza, someone was offering me a nice hot coffee, scones, Top Pot Donuts, and even a Nordstrom logo umbrella!  It was raining quite a bit.  Offering the free umbrellas was a much appreciated touch.
  • Create a Celebration Atmosphere!  Live music played loudly at 7am to get the crowd excited about what was to come.  Even with the rain the party did not stop!
  • Call in Reinforcement if Necessary!  I spent time speaking with the different members of Team Rack just to find out how far they travelled.  Many came from California just for this event.  It seemed they thought of everything, including having "on the spot" cashiers so you could avoid the inevitable lines!
  • Offer a Signature Service for FREE!  Besides the free morning comforts that were offered, there was the Nordstrom's Glam Squad!  I got my makeup and lashes done all for free and just in time for the open doors!

  • Lash bar!

We got our makeup done for free too.

Free loot!  I gave the donuts to my lil' sister!
It was a total blast witnessing a successful LAUNCH of a Seattle icon!  I felt like I was a part of history!
