CONFESSIONS of the ART

As I prepare for what is sure to be an exciting adventure of art, I can't help but to wonder what the end results will be...for this to be fruitful I must practice awareness and presence and not jump to the end.  I am almost positive the good stuff will be in the undefined middle.

I mean, I am a pretty creative person but I would never describe myself as "artsy."  Not that, that's a bad label to have.  I just never thought of myself in that way.

It may have something to do with some secret belief I have buried in the back of my mind about what being an artist is all about.  There's a part of me that associates being an artist with a struggle of sorts, made public via your displayed works, ultimately ending in death.  Scary, right?!

I remember having this thought after seeing the Picasso Exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum.  His pain and/or madness was brilliantly captured in several different mediums from paintings to sculptures.  One "piece" was a simple drawing of stick figure-ish characters in crayon.  Surely, this was at the height of some heartache or even mental illness.  Crayons?!  Was this a private struggle we weren't supposed to see?  I can't recall if the drawing was signed...

I wonder what he was thinking when he picked up those crayons and started doodling.  I like to think he had no hesitations and boldly put crayon to paper not caring if these simple strokes resulted in anything remotely interesting.  I like to think the crayons were a nice change of pace that just felt good and liberating.  This is what I hope to achieve over the course of my 31 days.  Inertia, or a change in direction that leads to a sense of flagrant, bold and perhaps even outlandish experiences captured in whatever medium of my choosing and slapping a big fat label on it called ART.

Here we go!
